Born in 1971 in Cape Town, South Africa, Mary Visser graduated with a Fine Art degree from Rhodes University, Grahamstown in 1992. A painter of largely industrial and urban scenes, her work explores the tension between surface, illusion and chance happenings through the experimentation and investigation into oil paint's materiality. “I draw on a combination of mediated images of landscapes and manipulate these in order to setup chance encounters between images and non-images. It is in this circulatory shift between the abstract and the representational that I hope to enforce the surface and canvas edge, assert the painted mark and attempt to make tangible the object-ness of the painting.” Visser has had a number of solo exhibitions including Nocturnes at the UCT Irma Stern Museum (2005) and Along these City Streets at the Association of Visual Arts in Cape Town (2011). She has participated in many group shows including New Works at The Gallery at Grande Provence, Franschhoek (2008), Possession at the Everard Read Gallery, Cape Town (2013) and the Small Canvas Project, Benetton Project for the Venice Biennale (2014). In 2013 she completed a postgraduate diploma in Fine Arts (with distinction) at Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. Her work is in collections including those of University of Cape Town, Oppenheimer & Sons, Sturrock Shipping and HSBC Bank. Mary Visser lives in Rondebosch with her partner Chris and her son, Nicholas. She works from her studio in Observatory.
