FOTOS HADJISOTERIOU 1919-2004 CYPRIOT LARGE OIL PAINTING SAINT THEODOROS SIGNED
Fotos Hadjisoteriou 1919-2004
Photos Hadjisoteriou (1919-2004) was born and lived in Famagusta until the age of 55, when he was forced to flee his hometown due to its occupation by the Turkish army. As a refugee in his own land, he brought with him only the rich memories of an entire life and the hope of one day returning. In 1979, he painted the symbolic work “Hope,” depicting an endless blue sky and sea of Famagusta from the open window of a farmhouse. The painting was constructed through a pleasing conversation between three colors typical of Cypriot space: blue, terracotta, and white.
Hadjisoteriou studied economics at the Commercial School of Athens and the American University in Beirut. He became a dedicated, self-taught painter while still a youth and was also a writer. His subject matter includes mostly genre scenes of traditional rural life in Cyprus, often combining the built environment with the human form or scenes from daily village life. His painting is characterized by folkloric elements, simplification, bold colors, and an emphasis on quaint details. He held solo exhibitions in Cyprus and Athens and participated in numerous group shows in Cyprus and abroad. His landscapes and scenes from daily life of farmers are characterized by folk-like elements, simplicity, and accentuation in graphic detail, with intense and clean colors.
