A fantastic quality Oil on Canvas by one of the best French still life painters of the late 19th century, Rene Louis Chretien who lived from 1867 to 1945. The painting is signed at bottom right.
Chretien's works can fetch high prices at auction, regularly fetching in excess of £8000, a similar work with exactly the same frame sold on 11th May 2023 at Bonhams Paris (Lot 3a) for 10,800 euro inc premium.

The painting is presented in its original exhibition carved and gilded frame which is in fabulous condition with original gilding.
Both the painting and the frame are in excellent condition.
René-Louis Chrétien (1867–1945) was a French painter recognized for his highly detailed, realistic still lives and genre scenes, often featuring rustic items and elaborate brown-toned backgrounds.
A student of noted masters like Léon Bonnat, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1887, winning multiple medals.
Born in Choisy-le-Roi in 1867 and died in 1945. He was trained by his father, Léon Bonnat, Gustave Boulanger, and Élie Delaunay.
Primarily a painter of still lifes (flowers, food, hunting trophies) and genre scenes. His work is known for a "lively touch" and high realism.
He received honourable mention in 1889, third-class medal in 1894, second-class medal in 1895, and a silver medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle.
He exhibited in Paris and Brussels.
His work is held in museums in Paris (Musée d'Orsay), Amiens, Angoulême, La Rochelle, Liège, Mulhouse, Niort, and Reims
