James Priddey (1916–1980) – Biography

James Priddey was a British painter and illustrator best known for his atmospheric depictions of English landscapes, village scenes, and architectural studies. Born in Birmingham in 1916, Priddey developed an early interest in drawing and design, which led him to train at the Birmingham School of Art. His education placed him within the long tradition of West Midlands art, known for its craftsmanship and strong emphasis on draftsmanship—qualities that became evident throughout his career.

Working primarily in oil on canvas, watercolour, and ink, Priddey cultivated a style that combined clarity of line with a gentle, observational approach to rural subjects. His works often feature churches, cottages, village greens, and historic buildings, capturing the enduring charm of the English countryside. He travelled extensively throughout Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, and the Cotswolds, producing a significant body of regional landscape art.

In addition to his work as a painter, Priddey illustrated numerous books and produced commercial artwork, including architectural drawings and printed cards, which helped broaden his reputation. His original paintings were widely exhibited in regional galleries and were popular among collectors who appreciated his ability to preserve the character of traditional English village life.

James Priddey continued to paint throughout the 1970s, producing some of his most accomplished work late in his career. He died in 1980, leaving behind a distinctive and recognisable legacy of British landscape painting.
