John Barclay was a pseudonym used by the Birmingham artist and illustrator Horace Hammond. His subjects were rural scenes in watercolour, often featuring cottages, figures, and animals. Horace Hammond also painted for a local dealer under the name of A.D. Bell and some paintings thus signed are often confused with Barclay’s work. The decorative subject matter and precise style of the 'J. Barclay' pictures have resulted in the work becoming increasingly popular. They are not dissimilar stylistically to Birket Foster. As Hammond, he exhibited at the RA, RBSA and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
