Edward Francis Wells 1876 - 1952 was a painter and draughtsman, born in Calcutta, India, where his father was an engineer, moving aged three to Evershot, in Dorset. Developed an interest in painting at Clifton College public school, then studied at Slade School of Fine Art, 1893–4; sought admission to St John’s Wood Art School; then studied at Royal Academy Schools, gaining the Creswick Prize, 1899. In 1897 had his first acceptance at RA Summer Exhibition, where he showed spasmodically until 1941.
After a visit to Italy took a studio in Chelsea and had a successful first solo show in Dorchester. With aristocratic support went on to build a reputation for commissioned portraits, landscapes and figure paintings in an Old Masterish style with a sentimental tinge.
Served in the Army in World War I.
