Kanwal Krishna was the first Indian painter who was allowed special permission to attend the coronation of the 14th (current) Dalai Lama, an event he painted and filmed. Kanwal was part of Basil Gould’s delegation to Lhasa to attend the occasion. Kanwal also accompanied the famous Indian nationalist Buddhist scholar Rahul Sankrityayan on his trip to western Tibet in 1936.
