Babb's fairly accomplished yet loosely Pre-Raphaelite style enabled her to migrate over to the more stylised Aesthetic Movement with relative ease. Often identified as the most influential of the "California Scene Painters" during the 1930's and 40's, Sheets was a master watercolourist and oil painter who had a unique and distinctive style. Sheets was born in 1907 in Pomona, California and grew up on a ranch, where he developed a love of the land and became attracted to simple, rustic, rural scenes. His modernist paintings often feature rich, bold, vibrant colours and are arranged in broad clean areas of colour with clearly defined sharp edges in a simplified two-dimensional composition. Sheets enrolled in Southern California's acclaimed professional art school, the Chouinard Art Institute, studying under Clarence Hinke and F. Tolle Chamberlin. At just 19, his watercolours were accepted into the California Watercolour Society's Annual Exhibition and, while still enrolled at Chouinard, he was hired to teach watercolour painting there. Shortly after finishing school, he gained recognition for his work, exhibiting in the United States and internationally. Sheets was so successful that he was able to travel throughout the world, usually depicting his experiences in watercolour. Sheets was highly regarded for his work in many fields tangential to painting. A master artist, he also excelled as a teacher, war artist correspondent, sculptor, architect and mural designer. He designed and oversaw the implementation of over 100 public murals, and as one of the directors of the WPA Art Program for Southern California, his leadership and impact on the local art world cannot be overstated. Sheets spent 20 years teaching at Scripps College and six years as the director of the Otis Institute before retiring to Mendocino County in 1960. His paintings can be found the collections of numerous significant museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, the Chicago Art Institute, and the National Gallery in Washington D.C

A highly decorative pair of matching 19th century porcelain Dogs, by Imari.

Mounted upon lamps and in very good condition. There had been a major split in ideology among the Hungarian avant-garde. The Constructivist and leader of the Hungarian avantgarde, Lajos Kassák (painted by Hugó Scheiber in 1930) believed that art should relate to all the needs of contemporary humankind. Thus he refused to compromise the purity of his style to reflect the demands of either the ruling class or socialists and communists. The other camp believed that an artist should be a figurehead for social and political change.

The fall out and factions that resulted from this politicisation resulted in most of the Hungarian avantgardists leaving Vienna for Berlin. Hungarian émigrés made up one of the largest minority groups in the German capital and the influx of their painters had a significant effect on Hungarian and international art. Apart from the political activists, there were independent Modernists such as Scheiber and Kádár, who hoped to find fertile ground for their aesthetic and social idealism. Hugó Scheiber, among others, suddenly found himself in the upper echelons of the dynamic Berlin art world. Another turning point of Scheiber's career came in 1926, with the New York exhibition of the Société Anonyme, organized by Katherine Dreier. Scheiber and other important avantgarde artists from more than twenty-three countries were represented. In 1933, Scheiber was invited by Marinetti to participate in the great meeting of the Futurists held in Rome in late April 1933, Mostra Nazionale d’Arte Futurista where he was received with great enthusiasm. Gradually, the Hungarian artists began to return home, particularly with the rise of Nazism in Germany. Kádar went back from Berlin in about 1932 and Scheiber followed in 1934.

He was then at the peak of his powers and had a special flair in depicting café and cabaret life in vivid colors, sturdily abstracted forms and spontaneous brush strokes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1886 onwards and at the Paris Salon, Glasgow and at the Grosvenor Gallery. Another picture from the Second Afghan War depicted The 92nd at Kandahar, but he considered it a "shocking bit of work", and after its exhibition at the Royal Academy, repainted it with a number of new figures; it was exhibited again under its new title Macpherson's Brigade at Kandahar. In Rome he received a visit from King Federico of Prussia, on honeymoon with Victoria of England.

In 1862 he decided to continue his Italian tour and left at once for Naples, Amalfi and Capri, before arriving in February of 1863, in Taormina, where he stayed in the modest house of Francesco La Floresta.

At the end of the that year he left for Rome by train, continuing his journey towards the north to meet professor Biermann in Berlin. From an early age he was determined to be a professional artist and designer and studied at leading art colleges in Oxford and London. While working as a contributor to The Architectural Review in the mid-1930s, Lancaster published the first of a series of books on architecture, aiming to simultaneously amuse the general reader and demystify the subject. Several of the terms he coined as labels for architectural styles have gained common usage, including "Pont Street Dutch" and "Stockbroker's Tudor", and his books have continued to be regarded as important works of reference on the subject.

In 1938 Lancaster was invited to contribute topical cartoons to The Daily Express. He developed a cast of regular characters, led by his best-known creation, Maudie Littlehampton, through whom he expressed his views on the fashions, fads and political events of the day.

From his youth, Lancaster wanted to design for the theatre, and in 1951 he was commissioned to create costumes and scenery for a new ballet, Pineapple Poll. His productivity declined in his later years, when his health began to fail. He died at his London home in Chelsea, aged 77. He used these experiences as the subject matter for a series of powerful paintings which used the machine aesthetic of Futurism and the influence of Cubism to great effect.
